In 1935, the United States of Vinland successfully developed a portable long-range mortar for infantry use, based on ragnite refinement research by Riley Miller.
Prior to this development, non-stationary mortars such as mortar lances and tank-mounted mortars had a very limited range, effectively confining their usage to direct engagement. While infantry mortars' range are still shorter compared to stationary mortars, they nonetheless can cover enough of the battlefield to greatly expand a platoon's tactical options.
