Lances are a category of man-portable heavy projectile weapons used in Europa. They are exclusively used by the class of infantry known as Lancers.

While primarily an anti-tank weapon, "mortar lances" have been developed for issue to elite soldiers which are focused on performance against infantry.

For the most part, Europan Lance designs visually resemble the weapons used by ancient knights, using a single-shot design with the projectile mounted on the Lance's muzzle. The exception to this is Lances used by the United Kingdom of Edinburgh. These are produced in the United States of Vinland, a democratic state without knightly traditions: as a result, their Lances are far more functional in appearance, resembling oversized magazine-fed anti-tank rifles, though they are actually rocket launchers with an exhaust port at the rear.

Most of the time, a Lance is fired held at waist level, but Vinland's Lances are designed in such a way that they can be fired from a shouldered position when the soldier is crouching.

Development[]

With the Empire being the first country to develop tanks in the late 19th century EC, as well as being the first to deploy tanks effectively in battle during the First Europan War, they were also the first to research counter strategies against tanks. The VB PL was developed allowing individual infantry soldiers to fire warheads that could defeat heavy tank armor, which was already capable of stopping smallarms fire and hand grenade fragments. Other countries also developed their own anti-tank Lances, more or less copying the VB PL.

The sheer weight and bulk of a Lance and ammunition alone was not something just any soldier was able to handle. As a result, the Lancer became a specific class of infantryman in Europan armies, restricted to the toughest and strongest soldiers their respective armies had. As well as their Lance, these soldiers wore a special Blast Suit to protect them from the antipersonnel mortars that Europan tanks had started to carry, allowing them to all but ignore the strongest countermeasure a tank had as they got into a firing position.

The Lancer's limited role on the battlefield was soon expanded with the development of the mortar-lance, a portable launcher for an antipersonnel charge similar to that used by a tank mortar, allowing Lancers to threaten infantry as well as tanks. These devices still maintained enough anti-tank punch that they could destroy a vehicle if aimed at its vulnerable radiator.
