Interlude 1: Squad E Assembles is the first interlude chapter of Valkyria Chronicles 4 and is automatically unlocked by completing Chapter 2. The combat mission in this is called Ranger Course Evaluation.

Story

While the interlude takes place between Chapters 2 and 3, chronologically this takes place in May of 1934, 10 months before the start of Operation Northern Cross.

Topography

The training facility is split into a north and south half, divided by a river. Raz will start in the north half, while the rest of Squad E will begin in the SW corner of the south half. Due to the presence of barricades, they cannot link up until the final base camp. Until the required base is captured, the subsequent ones will be blocked off by indestructible barricades.

Let's go over the details of the mock battle

"Our goal is to capture the base camps the instructors designate within the time limit. We also need to keep our losses to a minimum. After all, they need to test whether the entire squad is ready for the ranger course. One more thing... it doesn't look like Raz has accepted you as our commander. He'll probably run off on his own, and I doubt he'll listen to your orders. But I guess it's not my place to meddle in whatever's going on between you two... You just need a good time to talk to him. I'm sure he'll come around eventually."

Location: Edinburgh Training Facility

Description: A mock battle for ranger course candidacy. Capture enemy camps in the number of turns set by the drill sergeant. This mission is a failure if Claude, Raz, Kai, or any 3 other units are forced to retreat. Raz cannot be controlled on this mission.
