- "Chill out... it's not like we're going to die or anything."
- —Ilmari Gasotto, Valkyria Chronicles 3
As described by his squad-mates in the Nameless, Ilmari is emblematic of what one might think of old nobility in Gallia: detached from reality. A young man with little ambition, Ilmari is instead ruled by his moods and passions, both of which are subject to change at a moment's notice. While unreliable in terms of consistency, he's shown an uncommon dedication to whatever happens to be foremost in his mind. Unfortunately for him, serving in the army was not foremost in his mind the day he was supposed to report as part of a compulsory draft during the Gallian Invasion, instead choosing to sleep in. Military police later arrested him, charged him with draft evasion, and unceremoniously kicked him into Squad 422.
Not long after his induction into the Nameless, Ilmari took a fancy to Riela Marcellis, at times neglecting his training or other duties in order to think up a way to convey his feelings to her. Finding a disused bugle among the squad's equipment, he was inspired to try and win her heart by playing a melody on it. Some time later, the Nameless encounter a large Imperial force withing an industrial town. While able to hold off the enemy, the Nameless' situation looks grim as enemy reinforcements seem to be on the way. When Riela offers to act as a decoy to facilitate a retreat, Ilmari interjects to take on that role himself. Climbing a nearby hill, he let loose a call from his bugle when the conditions were right to carry the sound far. The Imperial remnants and the troops sent to reinforce them mistake the call as a signal that a force of Gallian Army troops is charging into the area, and all retreat, sparing the 422nd from further combat. While his feelings for Riela go unrequited, he remains a part of the Nameless until its disbandment.
- "An unmotivated young man who is willing to risk his life for the woman he loves."
- —VC3 COMPLETE ARTWORKS Description
Ilmari used to attend the most prestigious music school in all of Gallia, and had proven himself to be an extremely talented musician. Unfortunately, Ilmari was as unmotivated about life as he was musically talented, and dropped out of the school simply because he couldn't be bothered with it any longer. After leaving the school, Ilmari didn't hold a single stable job, and instead wandered around with trumpet in hand. The military eventually caught up to him and assigned him to Nameless for avoiding conscription.
Ilmari has never gotten attached to anything or anyone. He can't stand being stuck in one place for too long, hates commitment, and altogether lacks energy and interest in life. Ilmari's free-spirited nature has gifted him with a unique penchant for creativity and imagination, but he doesn't feel particularly moved to use his talents to do anything productive. Ilmari's assignment to Nameless changed everything, though as it was in this squad that he met Riela, for whom he felt a pure and sincere love. Ilmari's love for Riela was so genuine that he even stated that he'd be willing to die for her. Why he couldn't have applied that level of motivation to anything else in his life will always be one of the universe's biggest mysteries.
After Nameless was disbanded, Ilmari resumed his life as a wanderer instead of pursuing Riela. During his travels, Ilmari developed an interest in fishing, and that soon became his main source of food.
