Operation Northern Cross acts as the intro and prologue chapter to Valkyria Chronicles 4. The combat mission in this is called Engagement at Milt.
Story[]
- This chapter is where Squad E is first introduced as an elite unit of the Edinburgh Army.
- Squad E effectively used the Milt flower beds as camouflage before the battle, albeit with the Hafen being incredibly obvious on the hill they were hiding on.
Topography[]
The battlefield is a mostly open grassy flower field with a dirt road running though it. There's a footpath on the west side of the map inaccessible to vehicles, but is also blocked off by indestructible barricades. In addition, there's another dirt path that runs through the buildings of Kane's Farm.
Raz is the only unit available at the start, and starts in the SE. Allied reinforcements will also arrive in the south and SE.

Briefing[]
Unlike most other missions, there is no briefing for this chapter, though the mission objectives can still be seen in the "Mission Info" screen.
Location: Milt Outskirts
Description: Imperial forces have been detected in the outskirts of Milt. Take command of Squad E and eliminate the enemy.
Strategy[]
This is a basic tutorial mission with little risk, serving mostly to introduce basic game mechanics to the player. You will start off in control of the Shocktrooper Raz. Shocktroopers are durable, close range units good at fighting their way through enemy lines. Send Raz forward, shoot the first enemy Scout, and take cover behind the second sandbag. You will then be given control of the Sniper Kai Schulen. Snipers are long range fighters who excel at assassinating high value targets from long range. Have Kai shoot the second Scout in the head. (If she misses, that's okay. Raz can clean up her mess.) For your final action, send Raz forward again, moving him northwards to take cover behind the fourth sandbag. On the enemy turn, one of the enemy Scouts will attempt to attack Raz and most likely die for his trouble, leaving one more Scout.
On turn 2, you get control of Zaiga, another Shocktrooper, and Curtis Blackwell and Nico Emery, two Scouts of your own. Scouts are highly mobile infantry good at exploration, flanking maneuvers, and dislodging enemies from cover. Send whichever infantry you like to defeat the last Scout, causing the enemy to deploy a Light Tank and Claude Wallace to sortie in his own tank, the Hafen. Tanks are powerful combat vehicles with multitudes of weaponry and an immunity to most small arms fire, but have questionable mobility and a glaring weak spot in the glowing blue radiator on their backs. Send the Hafen to outflank the enemy tank and blow up its radiator to win the battle. If you get it done in three turns, you get an A rank and the Capped Bullets accessory.

Aftermath[]
- Claude was sad that in defeating the imperial units, Squad E had squashed the local flowerbeds, to Sergeant Raz's consternation.
